what does integral osteopathy do?

Created by Andrew Taylor Still in the US, it is a form of alternative medicine. An autonomous system of primary health care, which is based on differential diagnosis. A holistic therapy, as there are some who call you. “In integral osteopathy, we see the human body as a whole”, explains  Santos Silva, osteopath and director of the Osteopathy, Therapy and Training clinic in Linda-a-Velha, with regular consultations in Castelo Branco and Coimbra.

“We work not only the muscular and bony structures but also, viscerally, organs like the heart, spleen, liver and kidneys, to see if they are working and working well. In the case of women, we go to the uterus and to the ovaries, “adds the expert, who in an interview with Modern Life explains what full “osteopathy” can do to improve the quality of life for thousands of people.

What does an integral osteopathy do?

We look at the body as a whole. It has to be all in harmony. The skull, for example, has several bones. These structures all move and, in so doing, threaten the nerves and ligaments that exist throughout the body and that release the structures and all the muscular chains, which are several muscles that are located one at the foot of the others. This is our job.

We also release the neurological part of the body from chronic pain and even from sensitive pains, tinnitus and vertigo. In short, everything that medicine is known today can not. I sometimes have people with chronic pain who have been everywhere. We try to release these pains and even make them disappear completely. The result is fantastic and it’s a bit of a mouthful to actually work.

But there are also more and more clinicians who send us serious situations that they can not resolve. Osteopaths only manipulate. We call it the manipulative therapists. It is important to see when a structure is blocked. Then, for very specific pathologies, such as a frozen arm or a situation of chronic pain in an arm, we work, for example, a ligament at the foot of the liver and it is released.

And how do you, in practice, do that?

It’s palpation first. We have a protocol. When we have a person ahead of us, we have to follow him to see what the injury is. It may be a blocked organ. These protocols give us the sequence for the treatment. It is not through manipulation but it is often at the level of pressure in the location where there is a structure that is blocked. We put a hand on top and try to feel the movements of the muscular structures.

It’s a very sensitive process then …

IT IS! Our sensitivity to hand level is very great. We have to feel the movement of the muscle band and when we move it, we can feel the movement and put these bands in order, which means that we have to have a greater sensitivity than the other technicians.

Feel the energy of the body? Is that the one you work with?

We do not work with energy. It has nothing to do. Many times it is said that this is energy but it is not. We are talking about biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, organ movement … It has a lot to do with movement. This is even scientific. Of course, there are things that science has not yet realized and there are health professionals who have already realized.

The skin is elastic. When it is soft, it moves and sometimes we feel it has greater elasticity on one side than on the other. We do this assessment and work that lack of skin elasticity. In a certain situation, quite possibly, there is a nerve or an organ that is there blocking movement and that is our job. We saw things in more depth than the other technicians.

See the following page: Can all people turn to full osteopathy?

Can all people have recourse to your services?

If we are talking about people who have pains, yes, they can. In fact, there are many people who come to us who have gone all over the world and really get very good results here. Sometimes there is a clinician, who is a surgeon, who sends me to situations he can not handle. We experience a full osteopathy treatment and feedback from the other side is very positive.

A good professional always sends a patient to another good professional. There is also a symbiosis here because if there is a lack of medication and it is necessary to take an anti-inflammatory, for example, we do not interfere. We sent the person asking the clinician to follow her. We work much more at the level of structures.

Can a pregnant woman or a cancer patient, for example, also resort to full-blown osteopathy?

Yes of course. We help pregnant women. In their case, the body changes everything, in terms of bones and viscera, and by changing it implies that we also have to change the body. If there are pains, for example, we try to relieve them, not by manipulation. And we even tried to change the baby’s place. If he’s a little out of the way, we can put him in a more favourable position.

What about people with cancer?

In some situations, yes, no doubt.

What are the problems that treat you the most?

Herniated discs, tinnitus and chronic encephalitis. We have very good results at this level. There are people who stop having huge headaches and suddenly the lives and attitude of these people changes. They have a quality of life they did not have before. I treated a 22-year-old girl who had headaches almost every day. Nowadays, you have two or three a month at the most.

And it will get less and less! Anyone who suffers from medication to try to relieve these pains, as happens with many Portuguese, gains a new life after appealing to us. There are already many osteopaths who are not manipulative, are structural and work the body in a total way. Many of them have fantastic results …

There is also the case of an athlete with knee pain who sought it and who solved the problem through the mouth …

The nozzle structure is a very powerful joint because of the muscles we have on the face. When you feel pressure, especially in cases of stress, which gives way to almost all of us, all these structures block. Lots of people at night, for example, grind their teeth. Close your mouth and do not imagine the strength that all these muscles are doing. When contracting, they cause headaches, pains in the jaw, pains in the column and in the cervical.

Suddenly, all the nerves that go from the skull down there, like the sciatic and several others, are retracted and we release this nipple structure. The said muscle chains are free. And we get this through the pressure of a series of points in the mouth. At some point, the nerves coming out of the skull become looser and less tense, and then the whole body is released. It’s very interesting…

That is why they say they regard the body as a whole …

Yes, we see it as a whole. We did not just check the location of the pain. If there is a blockage of the joints, it is because there was something that generated it and that spiked it. A herniated disc, for example, only appears because one day there was something that made it appear. It may be, for example, the person having a shorter leg. Maybe I should have gone to a podiatrist to build up the structure a little.

In such a situation, you may have to go to a doctor first to remove inflammation and then come to us. Probably, there was a traumatic situation and we have to release the trauma and then work the structures. We also work the memory of the body. We have to reprogram the memory and we have to reprogram the brain. This is called neurolinguistic reprogramming.
