Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed first in May in the United States since 1949. It reached millions of people in the USA through local events, media, and screenings. Mental Health Awareness Month was started by the Mental Health America organization. In mid-March, Mental Health America releases a toolkit of materials to guide preparation for outreach activities during Mental Health Awareness Month each year. The motive of this regulation is to make people conscious about their health and wellness.

Theme from Recent Years of Mental Health Awareness Month

There are themes selected for Mental Health Awareness Month. Each them holds different potential, meaning and aim. Learn particulars below:

2008

“Get Connected”

The theme in 2007 was focused on an essential component of protecting and maintaining health. Materials encouraged discussion of the various ways of creating connections which support well-being and mental health, including friends, family, and others from an individual’s social support network. The 2008 campaign intended to increase recognition that mental health is fundamental to whole well-being and health, increases awareness of the role of social connectedness in protecting and promoting mental health during times of adversity when someone is experiencing significant life stressors and increases recognition of the symptoms and signs of mental health conditions with an emphasis on depression and stress and the importance of connecting with health care provider early.

2009

“Live Your Life Well”

This was a theme designed to encourage people to take responsibility for the anticipation of mental health concern during stress and personal challenge. The message was to inform the public that mental health problems could be avoided by making positive lifestyle and striving toward in the path we think and act.

2010

“Live Your Life Well”

The theme was “Live Your Life Well” is 2010. It was planned following the previous year’s theme.

2011

“Do More for 1 in 4”

The theme of 2011 was based on a 2005 NIMH statistic indicating almost 1 in 4 American adults had a diagnosable mental health condition in a given year. The theme acted as a call to action to help the 1 in 4 Americans adults who are living with a treatable, diagnosable mental health condition. It used to highlight recovery programs and treatment.

2012

“Healing Trauma’s Invisible Wounds”

This theme aimed to bring to light the sources of trauma, profound health effects, new hope for healing and the cost of trauma survivors and society.

2013

“Pathways to Wellness”

The theme “Pathways to Wellness” for Mental Health Awareness Month called attention to approaches and strategies that help all Americans goo mental, wellness and overall health.

2014

“Mind Your Health”

The theme was “Mind Your Health” for the 2014 Mental Health Awareness Month. The focus of this theme was to create a motivational effort that will put toward the goal to building public recognition in regards to the consequence of mental health, wellness and overall health of those around us. The association hopes to inform United States citizens of the connection between the body and mind which intends to provide tips, strategies and advice that will encourage people to take protective measures and positive actions for one’s own mental and whole-body health.

2015

”B4Stage4”

The theme of 2015 was addressing mental health before stage 4 calls attention to the importance of addressing mental symptoms early, planning an appropriate course of action on a path towards overall health and identifying underlying diseases. There is a way of doing so which is by taking a mental screening- a confidential, free anonymous questionnaire to assess risk factors and symptoms for mental health conditions.

2016

“Mental Illness Feels Like”

The theme for 2016 Mental Health Awareness Month was “Life with a Mental Illness” and called on individuals to share what is life with a mental illness feels like for them in pictures, videos and words by tagging their social media posts with #mentalillnessfeelslike. This campaign intended to encourage people to speak up about their own experiences to share from their point of view with individuals who may be struggling to explain what they have been going through and help them to figure out if they are showing signs of mental illness.

2017

“Risky Business”

The theme “Risky Business” focused on the importance to educate people about behaviors and habits that increase the risk of exacerbating or developing Mental illnesses or could be signs of Mental Health Problems themselves. These include risk factors like prescription drug misuse, excessive spending, internet addiction, risky sex, troublesome exercise patterns, marijuana use etc.

2018

“Fitness #4Mind4Body”

This theme tracks closely with the Fit for the Future theme of the June conference 2018. It focused on that individuals can do to be fit for their future during the month of May. No matter where they happen to be on personal journeys to wellness and health.

Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health conditions cannot be discriminated based on color, identity, race or gender. Anyone may have to go through the challenges of mental illness regardless of their background. Mental illness is sort of physical illness of the brain. It causes a disturbance in thinking, energy, emotion or behavior that makes it difficult to cope with the ordinary demands of life. Research is starting to uncover the complicated causes of these diseases that may include brain chemistry, experiencing trauma, brain structure, genetics, or having a medical condition such as heart disease. Millions of Americans face the reality of living with mental health condition each year. Taking on the challenges of mental health conditions, the stigma of mental illness and health coverage requires all of us. These problems happen in many communities frequently. The reason is less access to care, lower quality care, and cultural stigma. Mental Health Awareness Month meant to aware people to be concern about health. More or less we all need to take precautions to achieve mentally good condition. There is nothing better than a healthy mind.
